Started with the aid of an Awards For All grant in 2000, the Norwich Samba 'bateria' (as its known in Brazil), now has over 50 members of all ages. Norwich Samba uses a range of percussion instruments that produce the typically exciting sound of the Rio Carnival with a UK twist.

UK Samba mixes traditional Brazilian rhythms with other influences: reggae, dance, soul/R'n'B and jazz patterns to create a unique blend that is very different from established Brazilian styles.

The band and its dancers rehearse once a week throughout the year at The John Innes Institute, Norwich where induction sessions for new members are held on a regular basis. Norwich Samba have given vibrant and exciting performances at local events (The Waterfront, Norwich Arts Centre, UEA) as well as national ones (The Welsh Samba Festival, Brighton Carnival). This summer they can be seen playing an infectious mix of Brazilian rhythms and modern British beats at events across East Anglia and beyond.
